I came across this not-so-little bug crawling across my lounge floor. Apparently dopey from the recent colder weather, it seemed in no rush to go anywhere and so, before ejecting it from my home, I coaxed it onto a white sheet of paper and forced it to model for me for a few minutes. If it had been much livelier, there’s no way I would have got so close!
On a hike today, we were privileged to witness a brief, brutal, fast and furious episode of nature in all her ‘Gory’.
The butterfly in the picture flew past our heads and straight into the spider’s web that was strung across the path and which we were trying to avoid (you can see it in the photo). Stuck in the web, the butterfly immediately began to struggle. Precipitant upon this commotion, and within a matter of seconds, the owner of the web (a large, ugly looking, spider) pounced on it’s prey and attempted to subdue it. Almost immediately however, this wasp appeared on the scene and attacked the spider (which was many times its own size). After a brief, vicious and decisive fight, the spider dropped from the web, dead at our feet. The wasp then turned it’s attentions upon the butterfly, at which point I’d managed to get my camera out and take this photo. The whole episode couldn’t have taken more than 20 seconds to complete and, within a few seconds more, and not wanting to come between such a deadly adversary and its lunch, we left the scene uttering incredulous, but quiet ‘Wows!!’ .
