This is a piece of petrified wood that came from the area of the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, USA; a place that I can highly recommend visiting. Staggeringly, it is estimated to be over 200 million years old. I love the striated texture around the outside that looks like, but I don’t believe actually is, the original bark. The ‘top’ was originally just rough-cut, but was polished by my wife and I over many evenings after we acquired it on a trip to the Park in 1995, to produce the beautifully smooth and colourful appearance. This piece is now used variously as doorstop, bookend and general ornament. Against the polished and varnished ‘natural’ wooden floor boards of the living area it looks almost at home, don’t you think?
